How I Got Started
Why pay an “area” when what you want is solitude, fresh powder and a guide who can help you get it safely? Trail Blaser Guides (TBG) strives to serve all clients, young and old, from the pros to the disabled, that want the best outdoor adventure experience away from the crowds, guided by a local who knows the secret stashes, topo, slope, aspect, terrain, snow characteristics and local meteorology.
I was 2 or 3 years old when my folks strapped on my first pair of red plastic skis ... from there I picked up the notion of walking (yes, skiing preceded walking). My folks were some of the very first ski instructors at the now closed Stagecoach ski area near Steamboat. Why did I stick with skiing, what was the draw? At first, mostly to spend quality time with my folks (especially when a cozy mountain cabin was available) and later good friends. After endless weekends with the Buffalo Ski Club, I skied competitively with the Winter Park Freestyle Ski Team and after that, the Pro Mogul tour.
When the inevitable happened and that knee blew out, upon recovery, I took a spin on some Telemark skis and really began to explore the mountains outside the areas on my own, with family and friends and in programs like Colorado Mountain College’s Outdoor Semester in the Rockies in 1990 and while getting my Wilderness First Responder (WFR) in 1993. Still a current WFR after 25+ years, I have also added many pro track avalanche education certification courses with AAA, AIARE, CMS, Irwin Guides, Silverton Avalanche School and NOLS and in the process gained a host of solid backcountry partners and guides, many of which now work for TBG as professional guides.
I still coach and instruct in bounds, but that was all mostly for the kids. My dreams has always been outside the boundaries. I want to give the kids as many opportunities for getting after it as I did and I am 100% focused on getting out there in the backcountry and being safe for both them and myself ... and now you. When the kids ask me “Do we have to go skiing again today, Dad?” my reply is “Why not go skiing? So you can play video games? Trust me, after you feel the snow glide below your skis and boots, you will want to do this more than play games. The only reason we won't go ski something, kids, is because it isn't safe."
